More than 13,000 Americans have been kicked out of the military, for being gay. Pause and think about that for a moment. |

[Jul. 9th, 2009|09:41 pm] |
This made me shake my head:
"In 1754, Lt. Col. George Washington quit the Virginia militia, an obscure fact that now seems a bit more interesting in the wake of Gov. Sarah Palin's resignation in Alaska," - Paul Whitfield, Investor's Business Daily.
Let's see... I hear that Sarah Palin and Jesus both like fishing.

| 1930. |
[Jul. 1st, 2009|10:31 am] |
Have you noticed how the media spins bad economic news now?
"Good news! Car sales dropped 27% from a year ago! Results better than expected and better than last month's 30% drop!"
Wait a second. This isn't good news...car sales are still in the dumps and are still declining! The same reporting happens with housing numbers: Home prices declined by 18% in the past year, so they are getting better because last month they were down 19%! Um, how about an increase? Or at least a lack of a decrease? That to me would be the definition of getting better. And jobless numbers: Yay, 'only' 400,000 jobs lost this month! Much better than last month's 500,000 loss! Huh? I recently found a blog that highlights articles from The Wall Street Journal on this date in 1930, a year after the financial markets collapsed, but before the really bad economic pattern unfolded in 1932 and 1933 leading to the depression that lasted until 1940.
It is amazing to spot the similarities between then and now. I'm not saying we are in for a prolonged depression. I just find it interesting how "prosperity is just around the corner" in 1930, just as the blind optimists are saying today. These highlights are directly from The Wall Street Journal in June 1930:
Survey of Illinois Manufacturers Association finds slow but sure recovery in business, expects improvement in second half of 1930 with profits for year as large as 1928, and further improvement in 1931.
Congressional subcommittee praises strategy of accelerating public works projects to moderate unemployment in business slowdown, emphasizes good psychological effect of doing this quickly. Market observers see some hopeful signs: buying support is now coming out for stocks when they approach recent lows, and volume has been low in response to bear operations. Anticipate a possible quiet period rather than strong rally - this is typical of the end of bear markets.
Central Trust of Illinois says economy seems to be recently improving from end of 1929 and first months of 1930.
D.M. Marvin, economist for Royal Bank of Canada, says present depression caused by tight credit; points out that in spite of low rediscount rate many banks are not lending due to poor balance sheets; total credit extended by the Fed.
City Bank of NY criticizes blind optimism about an upturn earlier in the year, but also cautions against excessive pessimism. Based on history, depressions usually turn around sometime in the year following their start; consumption hasn't fallen as much as production, leading to eventual rebalancing.
Inventories at major corporations are low as they've been in years - this should lead to heavy buying when business turns up.
Labor Secretary Davis says business is definitely turning up in the East, predicts reasonable prosperity within the next year.
We've heard THAT before! |

| My nephew's graduation |
[Jun. 16th, 2009|12:05 am] |
This past weekend, I drove up to Rhode Island with my brother for my other brother's son's high school graduation. It's always a nice time there, and my brother and his wife created a very nice party in a bucolic setting, where they live.
My nephew is lucky to have both sets of grandparents living. Both sets of grandparents were there, my parents, and my sister-in-law's parents.
All are prominently featured in the video. It's already one of my favorites that I've ever made cause it's so frikkin sappy and I love that.

| Canadian Geese |
[Jun. 5th, 2009|02:22 pm] |
As I walked on concrete, toward the office building where I work, I avoided stepping in the many many many poops recently left by wretched Canadian Geese. My path took me toward one of those geese and its very young flock all hungry and eating so they can get big in a few months and lay people-sized poops all over walkways and lawns everywhere. As I minded my business walking toward my building it hissed at me. I hissed right back. And startled it. |

| How they operate. |
[May. 26th, 2009|10:26 pm] |
The Republicans are worried that the race and gender of Judge Sotomayor, nominated for Supreme Court Justice will make her unfit to serve. Listen to how they all repeat the same exact words!
Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK): Of primary concern to me is whether or not Judge Sotomayor follows the proper role of judges and refrains from legislating from the bench. Some of her recent comments on this matter have given me cause for great concern. In the months ahead, it will be important for those of us in the U.S. Senate to weigh her qualifications and character as well as her ability to rule fairly without undue influence from her own personal race, gender, or political preferences. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah): "I will focus on determining whether Judge Sotomayor is committed to deciding cases based only on the law as made by the people and their elected representatives, not on personal feelings or politics." Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.): "We will thoroughly examine her record to ensure she understands that the role of a jurist in our democracy is to apply the law even-handedly, despite their own feelings or personal or political preferences." Charles Grassley (R-Iowa): "The Judiciary Committee should take time to ensure that the nominee will be true to the Constitution and apply the law, not personal politics, feelings or preferences." John Cornyn (R-Tx.): "She must prove her commitment to impartially deciding cases based on the law, rather than based on her own personal politics, feelings, and preferences."
MEDIA REGURGITATION: "NOM NOM NOM SHE LEGISLATES FROM HER PERSONAL POLITICS PREFERENCES AND FEELINGS NOM NOM NOM"

[May. 21st, 2009|10:54 am] |
Conversation this morning with Sarah Palin-loving secretary from my department:
"You probably could hear me jumping up and down and screaming when they announced that Kris won" she said. "I was happy for him too," I said. Even though Adam is 100 times more talented. "And I LOVE his new song!" she shrieked. "What new song?" I asked. "'No Boundaries' ! I love it now! I heard it on the radio and now I love it!" "Yay for boring mediocrity!" I said. And I walked away. |

| The best disco song ever. |
[May. 17th, 2009|09:45 pm] |
I am dating myself here. And I may have posted about this song before, but in the history of popular music I think this is an important song. "MacArthur Park" by Donna Summer. And not just the single version. The song that we remember from the radio, with its odd lament "Someone left my cake out in the rain" was actually part of a 17 minute long "suite" that also included the hit "Heaven Knows," and another song, but "MacArthur Park" was the centerpiece. It was all woven together in a remarkable composition. Before computers. Before "Auto-tune." When a woman at the top of her career just sang out and hit all the right notes, seemingly effortlessly. For me, the segment between 3:50 and 5:10 is such a delight, where she just sings out a beautiful melody and words that just seem to gallop. Give it a "spin."

| Auto Tune the News |
[May. 15th, 2009|09:51 pm] |
I had heard of "Auto Tune the News" but it never really grabbed me until they did it to Katie Couric. I was transfixed. See 0:49 in this clip:
I happened to see Couric on Leno last night. I was SO happy that she mentioned the doctored video of her... "They do things to me on the internet too" she said. And after they played the clip, she said "I thought it was so funny." Yay Katie.
And now today there's more!!!
Katie, you're getting better at this...! I think I like her part in the first one better though, still.

| My lovely Homeowners Association |
[May. 15th, 2009|01:18 pm] |
Last year I bought and planted dozens of flowers along my walkway and in front of my home. It took a few hours of a saturday to get it done. A week later, the landscapers employed by the homeowners association came and planted flowers in front of all the homes. Where I had already planted, they planted more, in between what I planted.
I was furious.
Why hadn't we been notified that the association would be paying for flowers to be planted this year, unlike the past several years when nothing had been planted? "That was our mistake," the association vice-president said to me in response. "we should have communicated that to people." Yeah, you think?
And I was even ON THE BOARD at the time. And I still had no clue about it.
So just now I get a call from a neighbor asking me if the association is going to plant flowers this year! "I'm no longer on the board," I tell her. You'll have to call a certain two people who know everything and don't tell anyone else anything. I didn't put it that way. But this woman was also suffering from a lack of information, not knowing whether to plant flowers or not. No information, once again. Left in the dark. I can't stand them. I am so glad I quit them last year. |

| Dry cleaner |
[May. 13th, 2009|01:33 pm] |
Last Thursday after work I was running a few errands. Then I realized I had a dry cleaning ticket in my wallet that was like two weeks old, and I hadn't had time at all to go pick up the clothes in the days previous, even on weekends. I thought my dry cleaner was open until 7pm during the week, so when I walked through their propped-open door at about 6:35, I was glad I was getting this little errand done too.
The woman who works there appears and says in a heavy accent "oh, we're closed," and gestures to the clock. I guess they close at 6:30? And her husband takes my dry cleaning ticket, and finds my clothes. And then I hand them $22.
And I can't forget about this.
Why was their door propped open? Do they care if I ever go to their establishment again? Don't they realize there are like 15 other dry cleaners within walking distance of theirs?
WHAT HAPPENED TO SERVICE? Service is awful. Everywhere. Even in "this economy." |

| James and Dean's triumphant return to New York! |
[May. 12th, 2009|01:22 am] |
My friends James & Dean moved to Atlanta in 2006. In December 2008 Dean was diagnosed with Lymphoma. Six months later, May 2009, James and Dean made the trip back up to New York. Dean's doing really well. It was great spending time with them. Here's a one minute short video of our evening together.
I had to make this movie tonight. I don't care that it's 1:24 am now. Good night...
